Breaking down that Mandalorian and Grogu trailer

Here we are more than two years since the release of The Mandalorian season 3 and we finally have a trailer for the show’s continuation. This time instead of a 4th season we’re getting a feature-length movie, filmed for IMAX screens. However, if not for the movie’s title card at the end, you could’ve fooled me; it looks a whole lot like the show we know.

Let’s unpack some details from this teaser to see what we’re getting.

Somehow The Razorcrest returned

The opening shot of the trailer has Din Djarin’s iconic ship the Razorcrest swooping across a beachside. Longtime fans of the show may be surprised by this as it was unceremoniously destroyed by Moff Gideon at the end of season 2. Clearly some screentime of the movie will be devoted to the ship’s reconstruction potentially giving hints to an early plotline of the film.

Working for the New Republic

Next we see Djarin and Grogu spying on a camp of stormtroopers before cutting to them making some sort of deal with Sigourney Weaver’s New Republic commander character.

If I had to guess, the duo will take up work with the New Republic tracking down imperial remnants. As such the plot of the film will likely follow them tracking down an Imperial officer similar to Moff Gideon in the show.

Zeb makes his return

The Mandalorian and Grogu Trailer: Every Easter Egg You Missed in Next Star Wars Movie

Fans of Star Wars Rebels rejoice! Zeb Orrelios returns after his very brief cameo in The Mandalorian. There’s a shot of him knocking a stormtrooper up the head with his electrostaff. This likely will tease more reunions from Rebels after Ahsoka was a borderline sequel so hopefully everything there ties together.

Alien monsters

Most of the footage from this brief teaser is hard to decipher because it’s just Grogu and The Mandalorian running away from countless alien monsters on different planets.

This makes me wonder if the film will still have the same episodical feel that the early series had. Which begs the question then, why is this a movie? Still looks like one for sure and a TV show is sure to fit the wide variety of locations better, giving them time to breathe.

And also… Stinky?

Star Wars' Rotta the Hutt Is Getting Rave Reviews After Mandalorian Movie Trailer

Does anyone remember the Clone Wars movie? Not enough people talk about it (it’s really bad) but for the few fans it has I guess there’s good news for you.

Rotta the Hutt (Stinky to his friends) was Jabba the Hutt’s son who was introduced as an infant Hutt in that film. Well he’s back and is… kinda ripped.

Rotta is seen in a gladiator-style arena that shows up a couple times throughout the trailer. It was also announced that Rotta would be played by The Bear star Jeremy Allen White. This is a very weird movie. I’m curious to see how this ties into everything else since this seems far apart from the empire hunting of the rest of the trailer.

Baby Yoda and Babu Frik

Is it a mistake to bring back a Glup Shitto from a movie no one liked in a major role? Yeah probably but what if they did it twice?

There’s lots of shots of Grogu running around with Babu Frik. Now any true Star Wars fan should know who this is. Obviously everyone knows him, why else would his Google trends search have skyrocketed after the trailer came out.

For those like me who are doing their best to forget The Rise of Skywalker, he was the little alien freak that hacked C-3PO. His presence in the trailer so prominently implies that he will be a major character probably to give Grogu another marketable creature to bounce off of.

Final Thoughts

Star Wars: Baby Yoda Finally Hits Theaters with The Mandalorian Grogu - 3DVF

Overall this trailer looks… uninspired? It really just looks like another season of The Mandalorian and honestly might have been better off that way. The wide array of locations we saw here honestly makes me wonder if that was the original plan that at some point got shifted for financial reasons like Disney did with Moana 2 last year.

That being said, I’ve missed theatrical Star Wars and am glad Disney is pushing it still. This and the upcoming Star Wars Starfighter prove that they’re at least making an effort. The spectacle of the Star Wars franchise is often like no other and a chance to see that on the big screen, especially filmed for IMAX, is exciting.

Overall, I expect this to hit the same quality as most of the Disney Star Wars output of the last few years. Inoffensive fun without anything that makes it legitimately memorable.
