Orphan Black aired on BBC America from 2013-17, a run that spanned five seasons and 50 episodes. Its ratings, however, were never high. Struggling for much of its run to reach even average viewership, Orphan Black is a hidden gem that is currently found on Amazon Prime.
Summary
Orphan Black follows Sarah Manning, a young rebellious woman who witnesses the suicide of someone who looks exactly like her. Soon, she – along with some newfound friends – is thrust into an unfathomable situation with enemies at every angle.
What Makes it Special?
Honestly? Two words. Tatiana Maslany. The star of the show puts forth a fantastic performance in one of the toughest roles imaginable. Portraying multiple characters, Maslany seamlessly transitions from one to the other. She received award buzz for her performance – three Emmy nominations (one win) and one Golden Globe nomination.
The makeup and costume department also does an incredible job. Maslany is absolutely transformed into each of her many characters; at points, it’s impossible to even recognize her as the same person. Not only is the actor put to the test when multiple characters come into play; the makeup and costume department is, as well. Both deliver.
Besides the lead actress and makeup/costume department, the plot itself is quite unique. Not much can be said about it without giving things away, but the show is innovative – futuristic in a sense, and old-fashioned in another. There is always action; something is always going on. Given the five+ characters played by Maslany, there are many different settings; many different plotlines to follow. As a result, Orphan Black isn’t a show to be watched as entertainment while scrolling through social media, nor is it a show for everyone. One needs to pay close attention, and one needs to be willing to try to understand a whole lotta science. For those that are willing to take the leap, Orphan Black is bingeable and the characters are lovable.
Also featuring Dylan Bruce, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Kevin Hanchard, Jordan Gavaris, Ari Millen, Skyler Wexler, Josh Vokey, and Kristian Bruun in supporting roles, Orphan Black never lacks in the acting department. The characters are rich and complex.
Oh, and the show ends on a finite note. There is no worry about it having been cancelled without being able to conclude its story.
Verdict
Orphan Black deserves more acclaim. As a show that is unique, lovable, and bingeable, it is a hidden gem. Tatiana Maslany leads a cast of lesser-known actors who become all-stars for the show. In Orphan Black, BBC America finds a winner. It’s just that not everyone knows about it.
They should.
